With screen sizes generally limited to mere megabytes (10^6) of display information, how can we effectively use visualization to present big data sources of a petabyte (10^15) or more? Part of the answer is that we shouldn't even try, at least for some cases where other methods are more efficient. However, here are many classes of analytical tasks where visualization can play a crucial role in taming the scale and complexity of the big data to gain understanding. This presentation will explore the boundaries of where visualization can be applied effectively for big data, through an examination both of intrinsic visualization capabilities and of big data use cases.
