Although Hadoop and similar NoSQL data stores enable any organization, large or small, to collect, manage and analyze immense data sets, the security of their Big Data environment remains at risk.

Originally developed to store and manipulate public URLs, Hadoop was not created with security in mind. However, this leaves gaps in the security infrastructure of the Hadoop cluster.
To add security capabilities into a big data environment, functions need to scale with the data. Bolt-on security does not scale well, and simply cannot keep up.
A truly robust, secure Big Data environment must be applied where the data resides, and in a way that is compatible with the distributed computing environment.

This discussion will focus on the security gaps that exist within the Big Data / Hadoop ecosystem, and steps users must take to protect their data stores. Only a new approach that addresses the unique architecture of distributed computing can meet the security requirements of the Hadoop cluster environment.
